Senseless Violence...

And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?

And you may ask yourself - well...how did I get here?
-Talking Heads, "Once in a Lifetime"

Yesterday outside of M.E. Pearson Elementary School, there were two young teens shot by another young teen who fled the scene.

Here's what you won't here on the news:

It literally happened outside of one of the classrooms I worked in last year as a paraeducator. One of the paras that I worked with last year was standing at the window when it happened, and they heard a loud boom, which apparently sounded like fireworks. She saw a teen with a gun and a teen fall to the ground.

When my girlfriend, mild-mannered Occupational Therapist Lynette LeGrand, heard this she ran outside and tried to help the teens who had been shot.

One teen had been shot in the leg, the other had been shot in the head and twice through the chest/back area. Lynette started applying pressure to his headwound, but the ambulance just wasn't coming fast enough. She called over a bystanding postman to help administer CPR (she's a registered CPR provider since she works in the medical world). The postman did chest compressions while she blew life into his lungs. The boy stayed with them until the ambulance came, and they were able to take him away.

Lynette was covered in blood and had to go to the Emergency room. She had to pay out of pocket because since it wasn't an M.E. Pearson student and she didn't have to go outside to do anything, the school district wouldn't let her count it as workman's comp or go to an occupational health doctor.

Whether or not the boy survives, Lynette helped him hold on for that much longer. I can't say what I would've done in the same situation, but I bet I would be afraid to go outside, fearing the gunmen might return.

My little hero...

Kudos my hero leaving all the best
You know my hero...

There goes my hero
Watch her as she goes
There goes my hero
She's ordinary...
