I hate it when a popular song, that was probably written by a country musician, is redone in a country music version.
I think it stinks of unoriginality and cowardice. I never knew that pop songs were written by Nashville's finest until I heard a country version of an N'Sync song. That was later followed by a country version of an All 4 One song by some cowboy musician. The perp that triggered this blog entry, a country version of the Michael Buble song Home I stumbled across on the radio. (It sucked.)
I mention cowardice because I think the record label's mentality must be:
Let the unestablished rookie try this song out, and if it's awesome then we'll have the writer of the song record their own version. We'll make double the money because it'll reach a wider demographic, and the superfan will want both versions of the song, so catch twenty-two.
I mean I do love covers, and so you might ask what the problem is because I could just look at it as a cover. The thing is with a pop to country cover is that it's usually the writer of the song covering it and just wanting to boost their career:
Oh the song did well, maybe I should record it and make some money off it myself.
And of course the record label "ok's" it because they have the above aforementioned mentality about the situation.
My argument is don't write songs for other people if you're gonna steal them back again later and ruin them with your twang.
Just another random thought in my head...
