Have you ever done yourself the favor of listening to ANY-DAMN-THING sung by Richie Havens?
Do it. No matter where you are - work, Spain, Crashville, anywhere...
One of the best "African-American" voices of all time. Real soulful, gravely, just smoked-a-pack of cigarettes and got on the microphone/I'm old-and-black-so-every-part-of-me-is-worn-out-from-this-American-life-including-my-vocal-cords kinda voice.
My particular faves (not that I'm well voiced on him) are "Just Like a Woman" (Bob Dylan) and "I Started a Joke" (The BeeGees). He makes me feel it.
And he was at WoodStock, so that makes him cool right?

I mean when you hear the lyrics in the chorus of "Just Like a Woman":
"Oh she takes just like a woman,
And she makes love just like a woman,
And she aches just like a woman,
But she BREAKS just like a little girl..."
...come out of that mouth, it just makes you say, "Thanks Bobby D for writing the song, but oh man thank YOU Richie baby for belting it out with those negro pipes of yours."
...feeling it...
