I like Owl City. Several weeks ago I went to a free concert outside of the Beaumont Club in their "Back Yard" section. It was freezing cold, but it was awesome to hear live music after what feels like an eternity. I don't think I've been to a concert since the final Klangs show.
The sound sucked. That's my one big complaint. Why at small venues is the voice always so down and the music so up. I came to hear people sing. Not to hear the sound of a piano, synthesizer or a guitar. I yelled a futile complaint into the noisy night.
The lead guy in Owl City is really strange. He is really skinny and exuberant. Jubilant even. Very scenester looking with the swoop over hairdo. He got his start writing music in his parents basement because he is an insomniac. He couldn't sleep, so he created. His name is Adam Young.
His music is a little bit of Postal Service and Mae. I was finally able to put my finger on it. Except the guitar of Mae replaced by synthesizer sounds.
Live music is a blessing from God only surpassed by the birth of children. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Things that happened:
* I realized I was old and that kids are young. It stinks that past 25 years old you lose your grip on cool stuff. It grows increasingly difficult to stay on top of the edge after your first quarter of life.
* Young guys ran into me and Lynette gave them the death stare. They apologized like twice in rapid succession.
* This guy tried to put his girl on his shoulders and fell down.
* A couple brought their toddler and baby to the show. I think more crazy than cool. It was really cold after all.
* The people that push to the front suck. Men that follow girls to the front suck more.
Yes, I pushed to the front once. At the Uptown Theater to get closer to P.O.D. in order to mosh. Not to stand and giggle or toss my hair around.
* Crowd surfers suck. It's dangerous. No girl should ever crowd surf. All the crowd surfers if they made it to the stage were getting booted out of the show. (Great move.) I mean after they tell you to stop, only a DICK would keep it up, right?
Except during Owl City because the piano player told the stage hands to stop doing that because it took away from the show. I can respect that.
