This song is on fire...

I am a rock music fan through and through. There is something about the diversity of subject manner and sound that always keeps me coming back for more.

In the perfect rock song there is loud guitar (distorted, wailing, screaming...just loud) and hard hitting drums (a couple good fills, heart-thumping bass drum, and thrashing cymbals) and a primal voice coming from the uncivilized parts of the human subconscience (best displayed by Bob Seeger, Eddie Vedder, Ozzy Osborn, and Brian Johnson). With the right combination of those three traits, a song will reach into your soul and force some fist pounding, teeth gritting, or headbanging for sure.

Well out of modern musicians, two bands that commonly evoke my rock appreciation are two Southern Rock bands "Band of Horses" (originally from Seattle, but their music is noted for having Southern Rock tendencies) and "Kings of Leon".

"Kings of Leon" have a new track out called "Sex on Fire" (lead singer said that the band has lots of sexual undertones in their lyrics, so he thought for this album they would get it all out of the way in one song).

Well this song has the lead singer Caleb Followill wailing his lyrics out. The song tells a story of a couple and their secret relationship that is like a drug to the man. Caleb wails out the story, while guitars scream out his misery and the drums steadily increase their pace through every verse until they get to the chorus in which the cymbals dominate the percussion.

The song is amazing. You should have already gathered that from this little post, but the reason I am really writing this one is that I want to promote the music video which is even more amazing. It's scenery is dark and poorly lit (like the secrecy of the relationship), the man who has become addicted to their encounters is going through a detoxification to aid in him getting over the woman (at the end he coughs the disease out which is reminiscent of scenes from The Green Mile and my favorite image from the video).

Besides this story line there are two opposing images in the video that repeat throughout. My way of making sense of it is that it represents the struggle going on inside the man in detoxification.

Strange Imagery:
1. Man eating chicken/chicken walking around in dark:
I think the BLACK chicken represents the diseased man driven mad by
sex. The chicken being eaten represents what the disease is doing to
him.
2. Man bathing in water (shower/basin):
I think this represents the good and cleansing effect of the
detoxification ritual.

Well enjoy a great music video.

peace.
