"We take the good and bad
And make the best of it."
-"Buildings and Mountains", The Republic Tigers
This song is starting to blowup a little bit on my favorite KC radio station 96.5 The Buzz. They've played on Letterman (which I didn't have the intelligence to watch). Vanessa Winkler knows one of the band members. Glenn Winkler said he thought I'd really like them.
So I had to check them out finally. It's not the beautiful voice and lyrics, but the video really grabs me. I love music videos. A good one can make a song even better. A bad one can spoil the best song.
Throughout the song the guy is asking about the deeper things of life, like purpose and meaning. But they offer this hidden suggestion to the mad search for significance: just let life happen and enjoy it as it unfolds. Don't worry about the obstacles ("these buildings and mountains") that you suddenly come face to face with.
And the video is great. A guy dragging a rowboat, and slowly these strangers he passes decide to help him carry his burden and the experience becomes more enjoyable and pleasant. Then when they end up with a rowboat in the middle of the desert where it can serve no good purpose, they sit down and are content. Not angered at all.
Of course there is more than one interpretation of the song and video, but I like this one.
Comraderie.
