I Love Lyrics...

For the month of July, I will take a song I like because of it's lyrical content and discuss it analytically.

I am a LYRICS person. Most people are MUSIC people. What a song has to say is the most important element of me liking a song. Sometimes I'll like a song because it's funny, serious, romantic, insightful, spiritually poignant, or touches me in some other way. I find this much more freeing as far as the variety of music I can listen to and appreciate. Whereas most people I know like the way a song sounds (MUSIC people), so they get excited about a bass line, whether or not they can dance to it (most pop and hip-hop fans), or a mean guitar riff.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the musical side of a song, but if I discover a song that sounds awesome has terrible lyrical content, I will shun it from my ears. For example, I did like the song "Lips of an Angel" by Hinder at first, because of the sound of the singer's voice. However, upon further listening I realized the song was praising infidelity in relationships. Knowing the damage that can do (my stepfather was unfaithful throughout his common law marriage to my mother), I do not condone it at all. And can't believe that our society does, seeing as how that song was in the Top 40 for months. Good 'ol US of A for ya.

I also do not claim to have the final say on song interpretation. The great thing about songs is that you can interpret them in many ways. However, one of my favorite pasttimes is analyzing song lyrics, so I personally feel pretty good at it.

So if you don't like knowing what songs are about or people who interpret songs, then don't read my blog for the month of July.

Not that many people do.
